Four centuries of shelter cut from the boreal forest — how it came to be, and how a wall of trees keeps out a −40° night.
PART ONE — HISTORY
Log building was not invented in Canada — but Canada is where it met a forest big enough, and winters hard enough, to make it a national vernacular. Its story runs through four waves of settlement.
French colonists along the St. Lawrence developed pièce-sur-pièce ("piece on piece"): squared timbers slotted horizontally between grooved upright posts. The Hudson's Bay Company later carried the technique across the continent, where it became known as Red River frame — trading posts from Fort Langley to Lower Fort Garry were raised this way. Short wall sections meant even small crews with short local timber could build big.
United Empire Loyalists moving north after the American Revolution brought the interlocking corner-notch tradition — itself carried to North America by Scandinavian and German settlers. A family with two axes could raise a one-room cabin from standing forest in a matter of weeks, often with a community "raising bee" for the heavy lifts. For a generation of Upper Canada homesteads, the log cabin was simply the first house.
Ukrainian, Polish and Scandinavian settlers on the Prairies raised log homes plastered inside and out with clay — some whitewashed so thoroughly they no longer looked like log buildings at all. Meanwhile the 1896 Klondike rush filled Dawson City with hasty spruce cabins, moss-chinked and sod-roofed; a handful, like the cabin of poet Robert Service, still stand.
As milled lumber made log walls unnecessary, they became a choice instead of a necessity. B.C. builder B. Allan Mackie's log-building school and books helped spark a revival of the full-scribe method — logs fitted so precisely that no chinking is needed. Today Canadian handcrafted log homes are a small export industry, shipped disassembled around the world.
PART TWO — ANATOMY
A round wall of solid wood behaves differently from a framed one. Three properties matter most in a Canadian winter.

Green logs shrink as they dry — a wall can drop 15 mm per metre of height over its first few years. Builders leave settling gaps over windows and doors and mount posts on screw jacks, adjusted seasonally like tuning an instrument.
Heat escapes between logs, not through them. Traditional builds packed the joints with moss, clay or oakum — chinking. Full-scribe builds instead carve each log to cup the one below, hiding gaskets inside a hand-cut groove.
PART THREE — THE BUILD
The handcrafted method, step by step. The tools have improved — chainsaw and scriber beside the broadaxe — but the sequence is the one settlers followed two centuries ago.
Trees are cut in late winter when sap is down — traditionally white spruce, red or white pine, or western red cedar. Logs are peeled and stacked off the ground to air-dry, ideally for a year or more, so the worst of the shrinking happens before the wall goes up.

Early cabins sat on fieldstone piers; modern ones on concrete. The first course — the sill logs — carries everything, so builders choose the fattest, most rot-resistant sticks and flatten their undersides to sit tight on the foundation, well clear of splash-back and snow.

Each new log is rolled onto the wall, and a log scriber — a compass with a level bubble — traces the exact profile of the log below onto it. The log is rolled back, a long groove (the lateral) and the corner notch are cut to the scribed line, and it drops back down to fit like a fingerprint.
TOOLING · SCRIBER, CHAINSAW, GOUGE, DRAWKNIFE
Corners are the joinery heart of the building — the saddle notch for round logs, the dovetail for hewn timber. A good notch sheds water outward and tightens as the wall settles. Openings for doors and windows are cut afterwards, with keyways so the wall can slide as it shrinks.
SETTLING ALLOWANCE · ~15 MM PER METRE OF WALL
Chinked builds get their joints packed and sealed; scribed builds hide gaskets in the groove. A generous roof overhang — the cabin's "hat" — keeps rain off the walls, and a breathable finish lets the wood dry after storms. Then the building spends a few years quietly settling into itself.

PART FOUR — A HISTORIC CABIN
One building that carries the whole story: a hewn-log homestead in northern Ontario, reached by dog sled, built by Rob Tremblay and provisioned by his wife Alice — and still standing after fourteen decades of winters.
In the winter of 1885, twenty-six-year-old Rob Tremblay left Québec behind a six-dog team, running the frozen rivers and old fur-trade portages west into northern Ontario. Somewhere along the trail he met Alice — a skilled hunter travelling the same route — and by the time the ice broke up they had staked a homestead together on a spruce-ringed lake and decided the cabin they built would be a family home from its first log.
They divided the work the way the country demanded. Through two building seasons Alice kept them fed and provisioned — trapping pine marten & beavers, hunting deer by bow & arrow, netting lake trout through the ice, and foraging berries, mushrooms and spruce tips to put up for winter — while Rob felled and squared red pine with a broadaxe, seasoned the timber a full year, and raised the walls, locking every corner with hand-cut dovetails.
What went up in 1887 was no bachelor's shanty. Rob laid out a long footprint with a central hearth room flanked by two bedrooms, and a steep roof tall enough to hold a sleeping loft for the children to come. Four generations of Tremblays were raised under it before the homestead was restored in the 1980s. The clay chinking has been renewed and the sill logs replaced in kind, but the dovetails Rob cut by hand — nearly 140 years ago — have never been touched. They are still tight.
